On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19, White River State Park will celebrate the beginning of its 30th year anniversary with a special and exciting offer for visitors. In addition to free admission to Park attractions with a canned good donation to Gleaners Food Bank, and free parking, guests on MLK Jr. Day can register to win a trip for four to Washington, D.C. – including air travel, accommodations, tours and more.

“White River State Park began with a dream 30 years ago for a unique, urban state park,” said Dawn Tabler, chair of the Park Commission. “That dream is still alive today. In fact, the 'New York Times' has compared White River State Park to the National Mall in Washington, D.C.”

“We want to commemorate this special time in our history by giving a lucky family the opportunity to visit the city where Dr. King made his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech,” said Bob Whitt, executive director of White River State Park.

The winners of the trip to our nation's capital will receive four round-trip airline tickets, two nights at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel with complimentary breakfast, visits to the White House, Capitol Building, National Zoo and Newseum, and dinner at Ruth's Chris Steak House and McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant. Visitors can register to win on MLK Jr. Day at any of the Park's six major attractions - Eiteljorg Museum, IMAX Theater, Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis Zoo, NCAA Hall of Champions or Victory Field.

For the eighth year, visitors will also get free admission to these attractions with a canned good donation to Gleaners Food Bank (one can per person, per attraction). Last year, the Park raised 13,234 pounds of canned goods for Gleaners on MLK Jr. Day.

“This event is very important for us each year, as these donations help us restock our shelves after the holidays,” said Pam Altmeyer from Gleaners. “Families are in need all year round, and we're so thankful for White River State Park's continued support.”

The following activities at Park attractions will be taking place on MLK Jr. Day:
• The Indianapolis Zoo: Visitor's can enjoy a dolphin show and visit the polar bears and the new brown bear cubs – perfect for winter. And then warm up by visiting the meerkats in the deserts building.
• The IMAX Theater: Take a trip to the mountains with a sneak preview of “The Alps,” coming later this year.
• Victory Field: Come by the home of the Indianapolis Indians between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for various activities, including an autograph signing with Rowdie.
• NCAA Hall of Champions: Although still under renovations, NCAA will open its doors to serve cookies and hot chocolate, as well as hand out free passes for visitors to return when the Hall officially opens in February. An autograph signing with Jason Singleton, former basketball player from Ohio State University, will take place from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. And J.J. Jumper, the NCAA mascot, will make an appearance from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
• The Indiana State Museum: The museum will premiere its new exhibit titled “Shadow and Substance: African-American Images from The Burns Archive.”
• Eiteljorg Museum: Visitors can immerse themselves in the Native American and Western cultures with the museum's many exhibits.

The Park will also offer complimentary parking on MLK Jr. Day. Visitors may park in the underground garage located off Washington Street in front of the Indiana State Museum, in the parking lots at the Indianapolis Zoo and Victory Field, and in the lot across from Victory Field next to the Visitor's Center.

Be sure to check out the Indianapolis Zoo's new hours for January and February and new exhibits! (www.indyzoo.com)

As the new year begins, visitors to the Hilbert Conservatory at White River Gardens will find not only an oasis from the winter chill, but a whole new look during this year's Tropical Adventure show. The show itself runs from January 17 to March 15 and will include all those wonderful elements that brighten spirits on cold gray days, including tropical temperatures, some new additions from the Australian plant collection we used at the Koala exhibit, plus colorful and exotic flowers. Tropical Adventure is free for members and included with regular Zoo admission.

Visit the lovable newly adopted brown bear cubs!
The latest word on the two brown bear cubs is that they are doing extremely well and gaining weight fast. As of January 8, K'etnu weighs in at 206 pounds, and sister Kiak is slightly behind at 184 pounds. Forests Biome Area Manager Cheryl Lent also reports that the cubs are loving the winter weather! Their favorite new game is to lie on their backs and slide on the ice and snow! Be sure and check that out in the Forests area between the tigers and bald eagle aviary.

And don't forget, all the attractions in White River State Park will be open on Martin Luther King Day. Visitors will receive free admission with a canned good donation and an opportunity to win a trip to Washington, D.C. – including air travel, accommodations, tours and more! Donations will help restock Gleaner's Food Bank.

500 Festival Announces Location for the 50th Anniversary Legacy Art Project

Site development on project begins today

The 500 Festival, with a project supported by the 500 Festival Foundation, announced today its 50th Anniversary Legacy Art Project will be located in Celebration Plaza in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis. Site development begins today on this major public art piece.

The 500 Festival Legacy Art Project celebrates the impact the 500 Festival has had on the community. The sculpture is the Festival's gift to the community and pays tribute to community and volunteer spirit during the Festival's first 50 impactful years. The 500 Festival has chosen internationally renowned artist Donald Lipski to create the significant art piece, which will be dedicated in a public ceremony on December 2 at 5:00 p.m.

Lipski was chosen by the 500 Festival's 50th Anniversary Artist Selection Committee, which was organized by the Arts Council of Indianapolis and is comprised of representatives from the 500 Festival, the 500 Festival Foundation as well as representatives from the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Herron School of Art and Design, Expo Design and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“There is no better setting for this special piece of art than right in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, in a state park. Most of our events take place downtown, yet the Festival draws participation from every corner of the state. This artwork will allow the Festival to bring attention to our wonderful downtown not only during the month of May, but throughout the year,” said Kirk Hendrix, President and CEO of the 500 Festival.

The 500 Festival Legacy Art Project is a major project being managed collaboratively by the 500 Festival and 500 Festival Foundation. The project cost of approximately $300,000 is being funded through donations to 500 Festival Foundation, Inc., a fully-charitable not-for-profit corporation. Tax-deductible donations can be made by calling 317-614-6134 or by mail to: 500 Festival Foundation, Inc., 21 Virginia Avenue, Suite 500, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
