This past Saturday Strikeforce MMA held by far one of the biggest talked about 'dream fights' in MMA. Gina Carano and Cristine 'Cyborg' finally met in the cage after about a year of talking. These two ladies are probably the two best known fighters in women's MMA. Gina Carano is also known as Crush on American gladiator, and has been considered the face of women's MMA ever since she had multiple fights for now dissolved Elite XC. This fight had actually been planned for last year but unfortunately Elite XC had put too many eggs in one basket and ended up going bankrupt, leaving many fighters without home, including their biggest draw, the Women. So everything was put on hold. Finally Strikeforce was able to give the fight a home, and the hype started. Friday at the Weigh -ins Gina Carano was FINALLY able to make a weight division at 145, Cris Cyborg easily made the weight as well. So both women went in Saturday even on weight but with a slightly different plans for how the fight would go.
The fight amazingly only lasted 4:59 in round 1. Although the rounds are 5 mins each no one saw it getting stopped at such an odd time in the first round. Without and hesitation the women immediately started fighting and neither one of the women slowing down. The crowd was on their feet and cheering on both fighters as they made history. The fight started with Cyborg (7-1) getting the first combination of punches and kicks on Carano (7-0) and attempted a take down before Carano started to fight. Within the first minute Cyborg had a submission attempt and had rocked Carano, hard. Carano did mount Cyborg and started to land some very good punches before backing up and letting Cyborg stand up. It ended up being a major mistake, because after that Carano failed to control the fight. Cyborg repeatedly walked through Carano's punches, and hit hard. When the fight hit the ground again Carano ended on the floor trying to fight back a tight Americana (shoulder lock) With one final flurry of hard hits, Carano failed to respond, and the referee was forced to step in and stop the fight. Gina Carano was not immediately able to get up. Cyborg on the other hand took a lap around the cageto a mixture of cheers and boos from the crowd. Gina Carano was able to walk to the middle of the ring for the Official Decisioin and presentation of the championship belt. Afterwards Carano disappeared and failed to show up to the press conference. Cyborg told the press "She (Gina) can keep the title of being 'the face of women's MMA.' I've got my title right here."
The future of women's MMA is still uncertain. With Carano now at 7-1 and Cyborg at 8-1, there aren't many promotions that have women's fights, and even fewer promotions that are televised. I do have to say thank you, though, Gina and Cyborg. You've done an amazing job of representing the women in MMA and hopefully because of your fight the road for women's fighters will become a little bit easier..
