Saturday August 30 was a big night in UFC history. It was the 102nd UFC show and it did not disappoint. The headliners were Minotauro Nogueira vs. Randy Coture, and Thiago Silva vs. Keith Jardine. And although these were big fights that did not disappoint they were not the major highlight of the night.Out of the seven main card fights, four of them were definitely something to talk about.
Billed to possibly be the biggest fight after the co headliners was Demian Maia vs. Nate Marquardt. And these guys did not disappoint. Nate Marquardt ended up beating an undefeated Demian Maia via first-round knockout. Now a first round knockout is not so surprising. The sureprise was that Nate finished off Maia in 21 seconds. Dana White had also said that if this fight ended impressively enough the winner would have a chance at Anderson Silva. So Anderson Silva's next fight will be against either Dan Henderson or Nate Marquardt.
A real shock during the night did not come from any of the 'big names' fighting that night. Instead it came from UFC newbie Todd Duffee(6-0). Todd's fight against Tim Hague lasted an astonishing seven seconds. SEVEN SECONDS people! That is a new UFC knockout record. Todd started out the fight with a strong jab, when Tim fell Todd pounced and landed 8 more devastating shots in 5 seconds. Tim Hague went limp which made the referee stop the fight.
Thiago Silva came back after his devastating first lost to Loyoto Machida. He made quick work out of the 'Dean of Mean' Keith Jardine. The referee stepped in at 1:35 in the first round to stop the beating that Thiago was giving to Keith.
The main event of the night was Antonio 'Minotauro' Nogueira versus Randy 'Captain America' Coture. This was an amazing heavyweight battle that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. It went the full three rounds and both men put up a fight. The best thing about the fight was that both men are very respectful guys who are in the sport for the love of the fight. Coture even commented after the fight that fighters like minotauro are the reason he stays in the game. During the fight whether they were standing up or on the ground Minotauro controlled the fight. Couture didn't look out classed or overwhelmed, just over tired. Although Minotauro could not finish the fight with submission or KO, Antonio Nogueira defeated Randy Couture via unanimous decision.
Here is a quick run down of the rest of the fights that took place during the night.
1. Aaron Simpson defeated Ed Herman via TKO in the second round, Ed's knee gave out and could not continue the fight.
