There has been a new term coined over the past year or so, which you will be hearing a lot of over the next couple of months/years and not in a good way. What are obesogens?
Well there are three kinds:
•Bisphenol-a (BPA) – found in many plastics.
•Organotins - come from biocides and pesticides.
•Phthalates - found in cosmetics and plastics.
So these bad boys are going to be found in most things that you come in contact with, from plastic containers, cosmetics, some medications, the pesticides that are used for fruits (apparently apples are the notoriously bad at holding pesticides), the plastics and cans that foods at the grocery store come from, etc.
What these obesogens do is basically they imitate estrogen in the body, which in turn effects how the endocrine system works effecting metabolic break down of calories and how they are stored in the body, specifically fat in the body. The total effect of how much fat these compounds produce is not understood yet, but the effects are there.
This will undoubtly lead to big discussion about what are the effects in the human body and how much of a health risk is this? Just above is a link on how to avoid these chemicals and it is a good way to get a jump on everyone else before it gets picked up as mainstay in the American culture.
The good news is that it only takes about 5 days the rid the body of the obesogens through a organic diet and avoiding the other materials that have these chemicals.
